What is an AED?
AED stands for Automated External Defibrillator. It is sometimes referred to as a Public Access Defibrillator or AED Defibrillator. AEDs are lifesaving medical devices that can be used in a sudden cardiac arrest emergency. Defibrillation is an electrical current applied to the chest and administered to the heart — it is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest.

As the name suggests, an automated external defibrillator is largely automatic in operation, featuring a minimum of controls to make it as simple to use as possible. In fact, AEDs are specifically designed for user-friendliness and to be easy enough for anyone to use, even for someone with no training. When the pads are applied to the chest, an AED will first automatically analyze the heart rhythm to determine if a shock is needed. If the AED detects that it is not needed, it will not allow a shock to be administered — even if the shock button is pushed. With voice and visual prompts, the AED guides the user through every step of the rescue. Even if a shock is not needed, most AEDs offer valuable CPR instructions that can help a user to perform CPR more effectively, especially with chest compressions.

What Exactly is Sudden Cardiac Arrest?
Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is the third leading cause of death in the U.S., affecting about 1,000 people every day. It can happen to anyone, regardless of age, and often occurs in active people who seem to be healthy and have no known medical conditions. SCA is a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. This is caused by a sudden abnormality in the heart’s electrical system. When SCA occurs, blood stops flowing to the brain and other vital organs, causing the person to collapse. In fact, the victim is clinically dead and will remain so unless someone helps immediately.

Currently, on average only 10% of SCA victims survive, but when victims receive immediate CPR and are treated quickly with an AED defibrillator, the survival rate increases significantly. In other words, bystanders who take immediate action in a SCA emergency by calling 9-1-1, starting CPR, and using the nearest AED defibrillator, can mean the difference between life and death.

Where Should Automated External Defibrillators be Placed?
When it comes to sudden cardiac arrest, time is everything. For each minute defibrillation is delayed, the chance of survival is reduced approximately 10%. The average response time for emergency services to arrive once 911 is called is 8-12 minutes. That means that after just 10 minutes of waiting for an ambulance to arrive with a defibrillator, the chances of surviving sudden cardiac arrest are near or at zero. Saving a SCA victim clearly remains in the hands of bystanders. It is also very clear why having access to an AED in all public places is so important, with doctors saying AEDs should be as common as fire extinguishers.

An AED defibrillator should be easily accessible in all public settings including any place of business with employees, offices, churches, gyms, health clubs, restaurants, community centers, gated communities, apartment buildings, public libraries, sports arenas, airports, doctors offices, dentist offices, shopping malls, supermarkets, and schools.
